Project Description
The project involves the construction of a railway line and a conveyor system to link the Pilbara iron-ore project (PIOP), developed by Flinders Mines, with the proposed Balla Balla infrastructure port (BBIP). This will include the construction of:
• an estimated 40 km overland conveyor from the PIOP conveyor-feed chute to the Balla Balla infrastructure railway (BBIR) stockyard;
• the BBIR stockyard;
• an estimated 160 km railway line from the BBIR stockyard to the BBIP stockyard;
• the BBIP stockyard and conveyor;
• a borrow pit; and
• associated infrastructure and services, including external access roads, communication towers and reticulated services, water supply and pipelines, accommodation camps, a workshop and laydown areas, a ballast quarry, a power supply and a landfill.
The export facility will be capable of handling between six-million and ten-million tonnes of iron-ore a year.

The project will create 3 300 jobs during construction and 910 jobs once operational.

Latest Developments
The Western Australian government has committed to a state agreement with BBIG. “This state agreement includes a requirement for local industry participation and community development plans to be submitted to the government for approval, maximising the benefits of the project for West Australians,” Premier Colin Barnett has said.
The proposed export facility will use custom-built barges to transfer ore onto ships, reducing costs and environmental impacts, he has added.
