Are your tyres worth their weight in rubber?

While it is tempting to opt for cheaper tyres, these four, very small rubber contact areas are the only parts of your vehicle that connects you to the road.

“Rather than cutting corners with budget tyres, make sure you choose the right tyres for your business,” says Michelin Tyre Company SA operational marketing manager Rowan McKay.

He adds that part of the cost of buying a premium tyre is the research to improve tyre technology, advanced engineering and safety testing to ensure that these tyres are hard-wearing and safe.

Michelin has deployed its most advanced technologies to make the new Michelin X Works tyres robust, durable and reliable. Designed for use on roads as well as in and around work sites, these tyres deliver heightened resistance to cuts and scrapes and offer superior load-carrying capacity, while remaining cost-effective. The tread design reduces the risk of stones lodging in grooves and ensures that water and mud are effectively evacuated. The Michelin X Works tyres also feature wider grooves for better grip on wet roads, and an optimised groove shape that aids in cleaning the tread grooves, and allows for improved performance on and off the road.

“Internal Michelin tests show that the optimised groove design of the X Works XDY, and protective ridges in the grooves of the X Works XZY, allow for 30% less stone retention than the previous generation tyre,” McKay explains.

The casing of the Michelin X Works range has been designed to carry up to 8 t per axle in single fitment, and up to 13.4 t per axle in dual fitment. The casing contains high-density metal cables that provide maximum endurance. As they are more robust, the Michelin X Works range is long-lasting and its optimised contact patch distributes wear more evenly, which leads to greater total mileage.

The X Works casing is designed to be used more than once and, owing to the improved durability of the tyres, the rate of retreadability is greatly increased.

Moreover, Michelin’s retread brand, Recamic, is manufactured with the same tread designs and compounds as the new Michelin tyres and can offer up to 80% of the mileage of a new tyre, for 30 % of the cost of a new tyre.

“Experience and tests on different tyre brands taught us that Michelin’s tyres are the most cost-effective tyres for our whole fleet. They offer low cost per kilometer and are suitable for easily 3 and more Recamic recaps” says construction materials supplier Afrimat tyre management lead Frans Conradie.

“Michelin has suitable tyres for off-road transportation and heavy-load carrying. Michelin X Works gave us the lowest cost per kilometre, excellent constructed casings to take the punches, and a six month accidental damage guarantee* on every tyre in the X Works range 1,” he adds.

This proves that, if your business is on the road, it is in your best interest to invest in the only thing between your truck and the road to ensure your business stays on the road.
