JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – South African gold producer AngloGold Ashanti on Tuesday stated that one miner had been killed in a fall of ground accident on Monday afternoon, at its Kopanang mine, near Klerksdorp.

AngloGold Ashanti spokesperson Alan Fine said that blasting and drilling at the mine had been suspended until inspections by the Department of Mining has been concluded.

He added that the inspection was likely to be a lengthy process, but initial decisions on the continuance of operations at Kopanang were expected later on Wednesday.

Fine stated that although production would be halted during the inspection process, it was unsure how many ounces would be lost.

For the quarter ended December 2008, the Kopanang mine produced 91 000 oz of gold.
