JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Platinum miner Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) has launched an internal investigation to determine whether it should alter its security measures following a weekend attack on two female employees.

The group said in a statement that an “outsider” had illegally gained access to the women’s change house at the Thembelani mine, in Rustenburg, on Sunday, allegedly sexually assaulting an employee before attempting to attack a second female worker on Sunday morning.

“We are investigating how this incident could happen and, in particular, whether any security lapses occurred,” Amplats CEO Chris Griffith said on Tuesday, adding that any necessary changes would be made to the mine’s security measures to ensure this, or similar incidents, did not reoccur.

He noted that both employees were currently undergoing company-provided trauma counselling and receiving medical support.

The suspect, who had been apprehended by the company’s protection services on Sunday and was handed over to the South African Police Services, was due to appear in court this week.
