Air charter solutions provider Chapman Freeborn is raising the profile of its specialist on-board courier division, following the successful global expansion of the service last year, Chapman Freeborn Africa MD Iain Clark tells Mining Weekly.

Chapman Freeborn’s specialist on-board courier division delivers time-critical parts and important documents worldwide.

He says the upgrading of the division’s services follows the introduction of an Internet application, which enables clients to track their global shipments online in real time.

“This new application further underlines Chapman Freeborn’s commitment to growing its portfolio of value-added services, which complements our core aircraft charter activi- ties,” Clark asserts.

He highlights that the company’s spe- cialist on-board courier division offers fully insured and professionally trained couriers who have passports and visas for countries that are traditionally highly challenging to access, which normally makes regular courier services vulnerable to supply chain delays.
In July, Mining Weekly reported that in June Chapman Freeborn had added new air freighter routes to assist the expanding African mining industry.

“The new service will run every Thursday from OR Tambo International Airport, in Johannesburg, stopping over at Lubumbashi International Airport, in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and at N’Djili International Airport, in the DRC’s capital city of Kinshasa, using a DC8-73F passenger commercial jet airliner, with a capacity of 40 000 kg,” Chapman Freeborn Africa operations manager Heinz Lange told Mining Weekly.

He added that the company also introduced chartered flights in September 2012 using a Fokker F27 freighter aircraft, which is based at Entebbe International Airport, in Uganda.

“Chapman Freeborn also offers scheduled freighter flights for the mines to Mwanza Airport, in northern Tanzania, and scheduled supplying flights to locations such as Mogadishu, in Somalia; Bunia, in the eastern DRC; South Sudan; and Mozambique,” said Lange.

Clark states that Chapman Freeborn plans to develop more scheduled routes into African mining and construction countries.

Dealing with Challenges

Clark highlights that the mining industry is intensely competitive, which is why the company has to ensure it offers reliable air chartering services to secure as many contracts as possible.

“Chapman Freeborn has extensive experience of working in the mining sector enabling it to understand that when a mine turns to air chartering it is normally for time-critical pieces, high-value commodities, dangerous goods and crew rotations. We can offer our clients the best possible solution within the shortest period of time,” he asserts.
Moreover, Clark points out that the company also has extensive experience in offering specialised tailor charter services for heavy and outsize pieces, as well as oil and gas equipment.

“We have to analyse routes, payloads and timescales on a daily basis to propose the most suitable aircraft for when the request comes in from the mines,” he stresses.
Further, Clark says the company prides itself on its ability to react rapidly to emergency situations – including setting up time-critical flights outside normal working hours.
“Chapman Freeborn is the chosen partner of many companies for disaster-management situations, including that of oil industry-owned cooperative Oil Spill Response, which works to contain the effects of oil spills, control the risk to marine life and coastlines, as well as offer emergency evacuations,” he highlights.

Clark says that with more than 30 offices strategically located worldwide, Chapman Freeborn’s multilingual air charter experts are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

He further points out that, to date, the company has been awarded the World Cargo award for six consecutive years and the 2013/14 biannual Stat Trade Times International Air Charter Provider of the Year Award for the African region.

“Our goal is to continue building solid relationships in the mining sectors by remaining a solid player within the industry by continuously increasing our regular charters and scheduled services to the various mining sites,” concludes Clark.
