TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – A delegation of African mining companies and stakeholders led the market-opening ceremony at the Toronto Stock Exchange on Thursday.

Randgold Resources CEO Mark Bristow opened the market by placing his hand on the TSX plasma screen, and the ceremony was also attended by representatives from companies that included Rockwell Diamonds, Gold One, Midlands Minerals, New Dawn Mining, Boart Longyear, Drake International and MagIndustries, as well as from the TSX.

South African Consul General to Canada Nicolaas Schoombie also attended.

The TSX ceremony kicks off a series of events this week hosted by the Canada-South Africa Chamber of Business and MineAfrica.

There are currently 140 companies either mining or exploring in Africa, with 700 properties throughout the continent, listed on the TSX exchanges.
