JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Queensland’s Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) department has fined Indian conglomerate Adani A$12 190 for an authorised stormwater release from its coal handling facility at Abbot Point during Cyclone Debbie, in March.

The EHP charges that Abbot Point Bulk Coal (APB) had released stormwater from the terminal containing suspended solids of 806 mg/l, which exceeded the solid limit of 100 mg/l stipulated in the temporary emissions licence granted during the high rainfall period.

The EHP stated on Friday that the stormwater was discharged to the surrounding marine waters, a claim which Adani “strongly” rejected.

Adani said in a statement that it had noted the penalty and said it was considering its options.

APB has until August 17 to contest the penalty in court.

APB also raised its disappointed that EHP had released details of the fine to media but did not detail the fine notices issued to other parties following Cyclone Debbie.
