Nationalisation call based on mining being ‘gem in SA crown' – Chamber

The underlying logic of the call to nationalise South Africa's mining industry was the mining sector's status as "a precious gem in our country's sovereign crown", Chamber of Mines (CoM) president Sipho Nkosi said in Johannesburg on Tuesday. Nkosi, who was elected unusually to serve a third term as president at the CoM's 119th annual general meeting, said that the South African mining industry had the potential to satisfy two primary objectives of the policy formulations of the South African government, namely to contribute to the alleviation of poverty and to provide decent work opportunities.

Solution needed to electricity pricing, rand strength – AngloGold

South Africa Incorporated needed to thrash out a workable, collective solution to its electricity pricing issue, which, together with the strong rand, was putting the country's future employment capacity at significant risk, AngloGold Ashanti CEO Mark Cutifani said on Monday. Cutifani told Mining Weekly Online, after AngloGold Ashanti presented results that showed the company's South African operations to be under greater competitive pressure than its operations in South America and elsewhere in Africa, that South Africa needed to come together and seek solutions across a range of options.

New thinking needed on Eskom electricity tariff – Harmony

South Africa needed to apply its mind to solving the electricity price issue to avoid widespread knock-on effects that would seriously stunt economic growth and spark a new round of wage demands, Harmony Gold CEO Graham Briggs said on Friday. The head of South Africa's third-largest gold-mining company said that increasing the electricity tariffs by 45% a year over three years would cause prices of other commodities to be increased across a broad front and spur a new round of wage demands.
